A Community Art Project Remembrance and Celebration will be an exhibit of over 100 personal altars made by members of the Madison community. This exhibition is inspired by altar making traditions in Mexico for Day of the Dead but community and personal altars of remembrance are created all over the world. As a participant in theexhibition, you are invited to use your box to create an altar in whatever way feels most meaningful to you. You can draw from a specific tradition or create something completely expressive. Finished altars will be displayed for the duration of the exhibition.
K-12 Educators are encouraged to sign up and work with their students on an altar.
After August 18, 2014 altar boxes will be available at the Edgewood College Art Gallery. Register to participate HERE.

This workshop takes as its starting point the question of the changing roles of women in democracies and democratic movements around the world. Over the past few decades the growing visibility of women on the political stage, as well as the increasing participation of women in the democratic process and in democratic movements has led to a considerable change in how women’s issues, rights and roles are voiced and represented globally. Join faculty and graduate students from UW-Madison and the Madison community to learn about and discus the current stage of women and democracy around the world. Workshop themes include: leadership and participation, economic empowerment, human rights, democratization, women’s representation, violence, peace and security.

2013 Summer Teacher Institute: "Indigenous Movements in Contemporary Latin America"
July 10-12, 2013
In the past three decades, Indigenous peoples have been organizing in new and effective ways to counter their traditional exclusion in Latin American societies. These movements have sought land rights, protection of natural resources and the environment, cultural recognition and political rights. Many of the Indigenous peoples’ demands have become part of international human rights agreements and integrated into new constitutions of several Latin American nations. This summer institute will examine a variety of contemporary Indigenous movements with a particular focus on themes and materials about the topic that lend themselves to inclusion in Spanish language and global studies courses.

Our institute will feature first-hand explorations of Yale Peabody Museum collections, participation in seminars led by world-class scholars, and in-depth exchanges on select indigenous ethnic and tribal peoples, while offering practical tools to assist teachers in developing innovative approaches and resources for effective classroom teaching.

Hemispheres has been hearing from educator professionals with questions about the new State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exam in World History. This year's Summer Teachers' Institute will focus extensively on the World History TEKS, with the intent of helping you gain the background knowledge you need to prepare your students for the rigors of the STAAR exam. The core of the workshop will consist of content presentations from scholars at the University of Texas on a myriad of state- and national standards-accessible topics in World History. Discussion sessions will focus on trends in history, covering key concepts, and "bundling" content and skills standards to help you cover topics efficiently in the classroom. Daily wrap-up exercises will involve working with primary source documents concerning the content presented that day to turn them into Document- Based Question (DBQ) activities to use with your students. You'll leave with content, resources, primary documents, and a new outlook and enthusiasm for teaching world history!

The goal of this institute is to encourage and promote the teaching of Portuguese and the culture of Brazil through film, literature, service learning, and technology in any K-12 classroom. Educators may receive a certificate of completion for 40 hours of professional development if desired. Participants in this institute may have the opportunity to take their experience further by travelling to Brazil in the summer of 2014 on a specialized curriculum development institute.

2012 Summer Teacher Institute: The Politics of Motherhood in Latin America

Motherhood is generally viewed as a conservative institution in Latin American society with mother’s lives centered on the private world of child rearing and self-sacrifice for their families. This Institute explores the public dimension of motherhood in Latin America, examining efforts to shape mothers’ lives and demands by mothers to participate as mothers in their nation’s politics and economic development. Topics include micro-lending programs for women, reproduction and welfare policies and how indigenous mothers’ handicraft production both challenges and reinforces gender stereotypes. Exploring Humanitarian Law: Preserving Human Rights & Dignity in Conflict Educator's Workshop (June 18-21, 2012)
Global Studies at UW-Madison, in collaboration with the American Red Cross - together with partners from the Wisconsin International Outreach Consortium (WIOC), and the Universities of Illinois, North Carolina, and Washington - is offering a three and a half day workshop geared to middle school, high school, and technical college educators interested in bringing humanitarian law issues & resources into their classrooms and lectures.
The workshop is built around the Exploring Humanitarian Law curriculum developed by the American Red Cross (http://ehl.redcross.org/). In addition to trained Red Cross staff guiding an in-depth, hands-on exploration of the curriculum, the workshop will also include presentations by scholars, educators, and practitioners from communities around the state.
Participants have the option of taking the workshop for one (1) UW-Madison graduate credit if they wish.

This year marks the tenth annual celebration, which brings together award-winning authors whose literature spans the globe, with dedicated educators, librarians, students and children’s literature enthusiasts who gain insight into new cultures and histories from around the world. In the full-day workshop each author will present on their writing and discuss the stories that they have written and highlight cultural nuances and universal themes.
To highlight the 10th year milestone we welcome past and present participants to share the impact of this celebration in their classrooms, libraries, and in their lives. How? Designed to inform, inspire, and enable an open exchange of views on some of today’s pressing immigration-related issues, in addition to showcasing documentary feature films by directors from both sides of the border, each screening is followed by an informal interactive discussion with special guests of diverse backgrounds, sectors and experience. The Indocumentales on-line resource packet will expand to include new inputs that add to our understanding of the issues, and help connect individuals and organizations working to address them. Study Abroad for Teachers: "Mexico: Air Pollution and Ancient Cultures"
This summer course will be run expressly for K-12 teachers and for interested School of Education (pre-service) teachers. The program will build in opportunities for participants to discuss and develop curriculum activities to incorporate the experience into their classroom teaching. The course will be offered in collaboration with the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) and the Center for International Education (CIE), as a facet of their K-16 educational outreach programming. Course Objectives. Participants will:
- visit some of the world's most important and spectacular archaeological sites;
- become familiar with the cultural history of several ancient Mesoamerican civilizations;
- develop an understanding of the complex relationships between meteorology, air pollution, and cultural heritage;
- design curriculum activities to incorporate the course concepts into their own classroom teaching;
- develop an awareness of the difficulties in preserving cultural heritage sites in developing countries.

The Wisconsin International Outreach Consortium, WIOC, is pleased to be offering a ten-hour professional development course entitled, "Folk and Fairy Tales from around the World" in Spring 2011. The course will meet for two hours each on five consecutive Tuesdays starting on February 15th and ending on March 15th. The first meeting will provide an overview of international folk and fairy tales by an expert in international folk literature. Each of the following weeks will be dedicated to the folk and fairy tales of East Asia, Europe, South Asia, or Russia. UW-Madison faculty, graduate students, and staff will provide lectures and lead discussions. A final project, consisting of a class-ready lesson plan, will be due at the end of the course. Participants will earn one (1) UW-Madison graduate credit for successful completion of this course.

"Open a Door... Open a Book...Open your Mind to the World" is an annual workshop for educators, librarians, students and children’s literature enthusiasts, with an aim to internationalize statewide reading curriculum. The all-day celebration will feature award-winning authors: LACIS is pleased to offer co-sponsorship for author Laura Resau. In her presentaton, "Crossing Borders", author Laura Resau will speak about the inspiration for her critically acclaimed novels Red Glass, What the Moon Saw, and Star in the Forest. In writing these books, she drew on her experiences as a teacher and anthropologist in southern Mexico, her travels in Central America, and her friendships with immigrants and refugees in Arizona and Colorado. During her presentation, you'll see photos of people and places who inspired the characters and settings of her books, and hear personal stories about issues faced by immigrants, refugees, and indigenous people. Sessions will focus on the place of the Spanish American wars of Independence in World History, the role of women, peasants and Afro-Latin Americans in creating the new nations, and the enduring impact of the revolutionary generation for Latin Americans today.
