LACIS Lunchtime Lecture: “Opportunity and Inequality in Cuba’s Changing Economy: Examining Havana’s Highly Stratified Residential Real-Estate Market”

March 28 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Presented by: Dr. Martina Kunovic, Sociology Faculty, Madison College

About the presentation: The economic restructuring that started in Cuba in the 1990s and especially the most recent wave of reforms since 2010 have radically transformed opportunities for social mobility available to Cubans. This talk examines how Cubans in Havana are navigating the economic restructuring, and specifically how they are using their homes for both social welfare provision as well as social mobility, which used to be largely provided and structured by the state, and the social implications of emerging patterns in Havana’s residential real-estate market.

About the presenter: Martina Kunovic is a sociologist who earned her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and is a sociology faculty member at Madison College.
