In honor of Latine Heritage Month, the Latine Cultural Center and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Center (LACIS) hosted a special screening on October 12th. The event featured clips from Woven Lives, a documentary written and produced by LACIS Emeritus Professor Carolyn Kallenborn.
The documentary visits six villages across Oaxaca, Mexico, and follows Zapotec weavers, celebrating their extraordinary textiles. Within the landscapes of the region, the documentary explores how weaving remains essential to the Zapotec people’s identity and culture. Carolyn shares how Zapotec people still use ancient techniques while embracing new technology as they look to the future.
The screening offered an interactive experience as attendees received a take-away art kit in celebration of Latine Heritage Month.
This past Spring, LACIS was happy to welcome Carolyn back to campus, where she engaged with students, faculty, and community members and shared an update on her continued work in Oaxaca, Mexico. If you would like to learn more about her residence alongside Alejandro Jimenez Molina, follow this link.
