Documentary Film Screenings and Artistic Expression

Earlier this month, LACIS was thrilled to host over 150 Wisconsin middle school and high school students to watch the film “Home is Somewhere Else” and interact through creative drawing and writing activities with co-director of the film, Carlos Villalobos. Students from Lodi High School (Lodi, WI), Kromrey Middle School (Middleton, WI), and Glacier Creek Middle School (Cross Plains, WI) were in attendance for this special event.
LACIS also hosted a screening of the film and a discussion with Carlos Villalobos at East High School.
Here, you see instances of the youth considering the film’s themes of migration, home, belonging, family, and living between worlds. Events like this not only deepen youth understanding of the lived experiences of people in Latin America and beyond in migration, but they provide space for youth to connect their own stories to these important global issues.
This event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Mexican Consulate of Milwaukee, IRIS-NRC, the Chican@ and Latin@ Studies Program, the Human Rights Program, and the International Division.
