Sapega, E. (Forthcoming). Mining memory’s archive: Two Portuguese documentaries about the Second World War. In H. Owen, & C. Williams (Eds.), Transnational Portuguese Studies. Liverpool: U Liverpool Press.
In this essay, I examine two 21st century documentaries dealing broadly with the ways in which the Second World War was experienced in Portugal. Daniel Blaufuks’ DVD Sob céus estranhos [Under Strange Skies] and Fantasia Lusitana [Lusitanian Fantasy], by João Canijo, ask viewers to revisit the epoch and to question the Portuguese leader’s motives for maintaining neutrality during the Second World War.
