LACIS Faculty Director
Víctor Goldgel Carballo is Professor of Latin American Literatures and Cultures. He graduated from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and received a PhD in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from the University of California, Berkeley.
Goldgel Carballo has published two academic monographs: Cuando lo nuevo conquistó América (Siglo XXI, 2013), which examines the emergence of the new as a criterion of value in nineteenth-century Latin America, and Racial Doubt: Slavery, Passing, and the Emergence of Black Writing in Cuba (Cambridge UP, 2026), which focuses on the relationship between literature and slavery. His other books include the novel Modesta dinamita (Blatt & Ríos, 2021) and the co-edited volumes Piracy and Intellectual Property in Latin America (Routledge, 2020) and Slavery, Mobility, and Networks in Nineteenth-Century Cuba (Routledge, 2024).
His research and teaching engage with a wide range of topics, including media history, visual culture, race, migration, and decolonial debates.
