Meet our Fall 2016 Tinker visiting professor! LACIS welcomes Professor Bastiaan P. Reydon, hosted by the Sociology Department. An economist with extensive knowledge of land issues in Brazil and various developing countries and a UW alum, Professor Reydon is a wonderful addition to the LACIS community. Professor Reydon received both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of São Paulo, in Economics and Agronomy, respectively. Professor Reydon also holds a PhD in Economics from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil. He has conducted post-doctoral research in Land Management at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and at the ITC (Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation) at the University of Twente (The Netherlands).
Professor Reydon has many years of teaching experience as a professor at various universities. At UNICAMP, he was a professor in Environmental and Agricultural Economics, specializing in land management and policies. Additionally, he gained teaching experience as a professor at the International Center for Land and Policy Studies and Training (ICLPST) in Taiwan, and as a visiting professor at Utrecht University and ITC University of Twente. These experiences led him back to UW-Madison, where he will be a visiting professor for Fall 2016. With both his extensive teaching experience and his experience working as an economic consultant for various organizations such as the World Bank and the Terra Institute on Land Governance, Professor Reydon hopes to facilitate an exchange of knowledge on land issues in developing countries. Specifically, he hopes to focus on preservation of the Amazon and other environmental issues.
A public lecture will be held on October 25th, 2016 at noon, at 206 Ingraham entitled: “Deforestation in the Amazon caused by speculation with land and lack of Land Governance”.
