On Friday, September 20th, Sarah Ripp, LACIS’ Assistant Director, presented “High School…to College…to Career: Your Future in…Higher Education and Internationally Focused Employment” to nearly 75 students as part of Lodi High School’s annual “Career Day”.
Students from all grade levels, with varying interests, learned about the myriad options available at University of Wisconsin-Madison for future careers (some with an international angle).
In addition to sharing her own educational and career path to her current position, Ripp provided examples of jobs that require a high school diploma on to a doctoral degree, as well as salary ranges, and benefits. Students were surprised to learn that there are so many things one can do besides being a professor, administrator, or coach, and this made for a fruitful discussion.
The concluding section of her presentation highlighted the distinction between “soft skills” and “hard skills,” emphasizing the growing demand from future employers for the former.
